History of Clifford Chambers Charities

A number of small charities were established within the Parish between the 15th and 19th century, and it was only in 1969 that they were brought together within one Scheme, with one board of Trustees, as the ‘Clifford Chambers Charities’.

The most significant of the small charities was endowed by Thomas Jackson.

On his death in 1649, Thomas Jackson left £100 for a school and £50 for the poor of the Parish. The Thomas Jackson Educational Foundation is registered with the Charities Commission as Reg. No. 1008199 and forms the basis of the EDUCATION FUND.

Other significant benefactors to the charities

The Charity of Sir Hugh Casnell

On his death in 1490, Sir Hugh Casnell, Rector, left several properties in Stratford for the benefit of the Parish (and ‘towards the refreshing of the inhabitants, and in meat for them upon the Monday and Tuesday of Whitsun week yearly’). Other benefactors donated funds or properties in Stratford, all of which were eventually sold or demolished. These funds were all amalgamated into a Scheme dated 1884.

The Charity of Lister Dighton

Lord of the Manor, Lister Dighton, gave £20 on his death in 1805, for bread for the poor. He died childless, so the Manor passed to his nephew, Arthur Annesley. Arthur’s first son, George, who died in 1872, left a bequest of £5 so that more bread could be given out, traditionally on St Thomas’ day, each year. The two small charities were amalgamated, and administered by the Rector.

The Charity of the Reverend John Loggin

Several generations of the Loggin family lived at Willicote and, in a scheme dated 1889, the Rev John Loggin left a sum of money to be invested for the poor of several parishes, the main beneficiary being Swalcliffe. In 1829, Clifford’s share of £5 was used to buy cloth for shirts.
Clifford Chambers Relief in Need Charities are registered with the Charities Commission as Reg No. 254001 & forms the basis of the Welfare fund
